Know a Retail Location?

With Codata Explorer, you can know the environment and the configuration of any retail location located in a site listed by Codata.
You can also compile a presentation report using the various elements that can be downloaded.

With an example, let's discover the features of a retail location in Codata Explorer.

Search and list of location(s)

There are two possibilities:

  • either you know the location you are looking for and you type its address or name
  • or you do not know the locations you are looking for and you type various elements that will allow you to find any desired locations.

In both cases, you have to use the locations search engine.

Select one or several place(s)

This unit allows you to find a location in the database by its precise address. Names of places (site, city, urban unit, province, region, country) are suggested depending on what you are entering.
If you do not know the address of the location, it is possible to enter several names of places, for instance if you are looking for the locations of a retailer in some cities.

Name of the retailer or of the shop

This unit allows you to find a location in the database by the name of the shop or of the retailer. Names are suggested depending on what you are entering.
If you do not select a place, the location will be searched among the 700,000 locations of the database located in the 10 studied countries. We thus advise you to select a place, for instance a country, in the previous unit.

Activity(ies) of the location

If you neither know the precise address nor the name of the location you are looking for, you can start your search by activity.
A maximum of 6 activities can be assigned to each location of the Codata database. The list of results you will get will take each activity assigned to the locations into account (not only the general activity, but also detailed activities if they are significant).
If you do not select a place, the location will be searched among the 700,000 locations of the database located in the 10 studied countries. We thus advise you to select a place, for instance a country, in the previous unit.
As a reminder: the list of general and detailed activities has been defined by Codata. Groupings are also defined to establish statistics on the distribution of shops.

Further options

This unit allows you to define various criteria such as geographical positioning, type of site, population, the features of the occupants etc.

Link to the pictures of the location

Via the "picture" pictogram, you can display the shopfront picture. The picture of the last census is displayed, as well as those taken during the previous censuses.

Link to the cartographic interface

Display the cartographic interface by clickling on the "map pictogram".

The selected location is situated in the middle of the window.

At a glance, you can visualise the shape of the shop, its positioning, as well as the names and activities of the nearest shops.

Many functionalities are provided to help you to better understand the commercial environment of each location.

Display the search results

It is possible to display the search results on the map.

Pour cela, il faut préciser la recherche. Par exemple les commerces du secteur "chaussures-maroquinerie" sur l'unité urbaine de Reims.

To do this, you have to refine your search. For instance, select further criteria such as shops providing "Footwear - Leather goods" on the urban unit of Reims.

You get the list of sites and you display the cartographic interface by clicking on the "map pictogram" located at the end of a site line.

Now you can visualise the positioning of leather goods and footwear shops on the selected site.

It should be noted that this tool allows you to display the locations, the sites, the projects as well as the out of criteria elements corresponding to your search.

Projects are also displayed and located in the cartographic interface.

In each case, you can click on the point of interest. It will lead you to a window providing further information.

Thematic map

The "Thematic map" tool allows you to display different criteria according to various colour codes.

  • Activities

  • New shops that appeared between the last two censuses

  • Retailers

  • Vacant locations.

Customisation / Pictograms

This heading allows you to insert pictograms in the map. You will thus be able to highlight the shop(s) of your choice.

The chosen pictogram remains on the map unless you disable it. It will appear on the map when you save and print the PDF file.

Measuring tools

The "Measuring tools" area offers you 3 tools to measure distances, perimeters and surface areas.

To measure a distance, select the starting point with a left click. Define the distance using the red mark. Conclude with a second left click on the map. Click again on the pictogram in the left column to deselect it.

To measure a surface area, select the vertices of the surface area you wish to measure with a left click and conclude with a double left click.
Click again on the pictogram in the left column to deselect it.

Link to the location index card

From the list of locations, different index cards are available.

  • Detailed location index card

  • Detailed site index card

  • Detailed retailer index card, if the location is occupied by a retailer listed in Codata database

Compile your presentation report

All available data, all lists and all maps can be downloaded in PDF format. Thus, Codata Explorer gives you the opportunity to compile your presentation reports and to customise them by integrating the lists, index cards and visual effects of your choice.
You can also download data in XLS format. This will enable you to treat it differently and/or import it in your own databases.
If you need help regarding download, see "Data download".
